Instigation of General Caswell who was his neighbor forepart of 1776 volunteered, in Capt. Thomas Williams Company repaired to Kinston..5 mile from where he resides under Caswell marched through Duplin & Sampson Co. To Cross Creek, now Fayetteville thence to Moore's Creek Gen. Caswell engagement with Tories under McLeod, McDaniel, and Campbell was not part of engagement on a Scouting party under Lt. Burwell Mourning and was about a mile and a half distant this expedition Capt Jesse Cobb of Lenoir Co. Comands a company of minute men after Moore's creek retrace their steps homeward reached Kinston discharged by Caswell having applied for it. Short after volunteered under Gen. Caswell at Kinston marched in company of Capt Thomas Williams for town of Wilmington NC. Three months there Col Jarvis was the Col. of the regiment. Richard Caswell Jr. was Col. to this applicant's regiment and Burwell Mourning lieutenant; Jesse Cobb of Lenoir was Capt. Of our Company. Independence of the States was declared by Congress on July 4, 1776 six weeks after that time we broke up at Wilmington. Marched for Kinston where this applicant was discharged Feb 1777 volunteered under Capt Samuel Caswell. Placed under general command of Gen. William Caswell to guard the magazine of army and ammunition in Kinston NC about 60 men upon this duty discharge from Gen. William Caswell April 1777 served as a substitute for John Creech drafted by Capt. Menaw(?) Patrick in Kinston was in Capt Thomas Pasteur's Company .under Gen Sumner, Col Richard Caswell, and Capt. Pasteur marched from Kinston up through Johnston and Wake County Salibury and Charlotte into South Carolina light horse engagements retraced steps into NC reached the Yatkin River discharged by Gen Sumner one Knight was Adjutant Johnson(?) Capt..Jesse Phyan was Lt. and Ephraim Pryor was ensign served five months and 11 days Aug 1782 volunteered under Gen. Lillington in Kinston marched under his command and Capt Matthew Morely to intercept Major Craig a British officer on way from the south to New Bern met at Hagret's in Jones County short engagement British retreats to New Bridge over the Trent River. Came on to Trenton(?) in Jones County remained eight days then marched under Major William Shepard to Kinston. Served only 10 days for the special purpose of opposing Major Craig

Solomon Witherington made an oath that he is the brother of William Witherington lived together during the Rev War recollects his march on Moore's Creek together with his brother James but cannot say how long he was in the service .


William Witherington was married to Susannah Coward September the 17th 1797 in Green County North Carolina father died in Craven Co. NC Dec the 28th 1844 mother died in the state and county aforesaid May the 4th 1845.
