Phillips Families of Prince George County, VA and the surrounding area, aka Southside Virginia
By Rex Phillips (His comments are in green.)

Two sisters, daughters of John Lanthrop, married men named Phillips at approx the same time, ca 1725, based upon the births recorded in the Bristol Parish registry. It had been assumed that the two Phillips, named Thomas & John were brothers marrying sisters was a common occurrence. However, Thomas Phillips migrated to Craven Co., NC in 1730's and nothing has been found by me to connect the two. With the exception of the names John for their first son and a daughter named Mary (and almost every family it seems had a John & Mary ), the naming scheme for Thomas family does not resemble that of the John & Anne Phillips family in any way. Since Isabell's father was named John even the name John could be accredited to him.

Descendants of Thomas Phillips have been identified and are in the Phillips DNA Program. If a male Phillips descendant of the George and John Phillips who were in Brunswick and Lunenburg Cos. can be identified and gotten into the DNA Program we can determine whether or not the two lines are related. The descendants who are linked by DNA to this group can be found at:

They are Group 5 whereas I am in Group 3 with Joseph (d. 1777) as my oldest known ancestor. Michael Phillips of my group has oldest known ancestors in Charles City Co. prior to 1700. Charles City Co. is adjacent to Prince George Co. on the east. A portion of Charles City Co.was taken to form Prince George County. Later portions of Pr.George and Surry Co.s were taken to form Brunswick and later still a portion of Brunswick was taken to form Lunenburg Co.

From the above two patents, both dated Sept. 20, 1751, we can determine that George was the son of a John Phillips, who we will refer to as John I. I believe that John II, son of John I, named his son George, b. 1746, after his brother, the George in the above patent.

Pr. George Co. Records 1733-1792 Sept. 12, 1738

On petition of James Baugh, David Meeks, -----, -----, Richard Phillips, George Phillips etc etc.: they are permitted to clear a road from Plantation of Peter Mitchell, the most convenient way into Monkneck Road. James Baugh appointed overseer.

This is the first record of a George Phillips found in Pr. George. This would suggest that this George was born before 1716 and thus is likely the son of John I. The Richard Phillips is unknown as this is the ONLY record I have seen of a Richard in Pr. George Co. in this time period. I can€™t pinpoint the spot where this road was, however, Monksneck Creek is now known as Rowanty Creek and the Monksneck bridge was 5 ½ miles due east of present day town of Dinwiddie, VA. This area is in what is now Dinwiddie Co. Descendants of John Phillips I & II were still in this area in at least late 1800s.

The following deed appears to involve John II and his son Joseph (b. Nov. 1726). It is this Joseph that I feel could be my GGGGG GF who died in Brunswick Co. in 1777. Note that the location of this land between Warwick & Second Swamps is also the general location of the land in the patents for John I and his son George.

While I believe that the John & George who show up in Brunswick & Lunenburg Cos. are connected to the Pr. George Phillips, the question is how? John II, son of John I, was m. ca 1724-25 so a dob for John II of ca 1702 or before would be reasonable. That would put a reasonable dob for John I of ca 1680 or earlier. John I probably first purchased land in Pr. George between 1704 and 1720. (No land was listed in the VA 1704 Quit Land records for him and he added to his land in the 1720s) It is harder to establish a dob for his son George. The earliest record is the 1738 road petition meaning that his dob was at least 21 years prior to that or ca 1717 or earlier. A George Phillips m. Sussanah Dyer and their son Dyer Phillips married in 1786.

Grandson Dyer Phillips was listed in Robert Dyer's Nov. 1761 will so his dob would be 1761 or before. And a reasonable marriage date for George & Sussannah would be ca 1759 or earlier. George was still listed in the Lunenburg Tithing List in 1783, however it showed him with no tithes (white or black). Dyer Phillips was also on that list with €œNL€ under each category just like George. There was a Robert in 1783 List with 1 tithe over 21 and 3 €œwhite soles€ (sic) and 6 black tithes. All this leads me to believe that the George who patented land in Brunswick & Lunenburg Cos. and who married Susannah Dyer was the son of the George Phillips of Pr. George records.

Supposedly John II stayed on in Pr.George Co. If this is the case, who is the John Phillips that shows up with George in Lunenburg Co.? I believe that either it is an unrelated John Phillips or brother to George (Jr.) with the latter being the most likely.

My reason for showing several MOORE deeds above and below is that I suspect that the wife of my Joseph Phillips of Brunswick Co. might have been a Moore. At least two and perhaps three of Joseph's grandchildren were given the middle name of Moore (incl. one girl). This almost always indicated a familial relationship. There were other indicators of such a relationship such as naming a son Sterling Phillips as there was a Sterling Moore in the Brunswick Moores and several marriages between various families close to the Phillips in Brunswick Co. I have been trying to find a book by Ray Sasser of Emporia,VA which details a lot of the inter marriages of the Braswells, Sewards, Moores,Wessons, Phillips, House, Nannys etc. of Brunswick Co.

Lunenburg, VA Records

Tithing List

Here is how Phillips are shown in the Lunenburg tithing List in various years:

 • 1748- thru 1752 George - 2 tithes John - 1 tithe
 • 1764 George - 5 John - 2
 • 1769 Capt. George - 0 John - 1 Robert - 7
 • 1773 Capt. George - 8 John - 4 Robt. 4 James -5, Thomas, Sr.-0, Thomas, Jr. Thomas, Jr.-2
 • 1774 & 75 Capt. George 0(Shown living with John Riddle 9 tithes)
 • 1774 & 75 Anthony with Charles Hamlin (11 tithes) Robert 1 tithe
 • 1776 George 6, Anthony (w/Hamlin - 11), James - 5
 • 1783 Robert 1 tithe, 1 over 21, 3 white soles

Deyer Phillips and a John Brown were listed under George Phillips with 8 tithes, 1 over 21, 6 white soles (sic) and 12 blacks

George Philips was listed as a Vestryman in 1746 of the Cumberland Parish Vestry.

There is an Ann Phillips and an Ann Phillips,Jr, that appear in the 1779 land tax rolls for Pr. George Co. It is unknown whether this is a dau-in-law etc. or if they used the designations to distinguish between the older and younger of two people with the same name. Ann (Sr.) apparently died between 1779 and 1789 as she was not on the 1789 list.

Thomas Phillips and family migrated to N.C. and all his children died in NC so the John son of Thoams CAN NOT BE the JOHN PHILLIPS found in Brunswick or Lunenburg Cos.

Prince George Co. was one of the so-called €Burned Counties€. Most of the deeds and other county records were destroyed during the Civil War. Fortunately the Patent Records were not destroyed, being at the State level and not stored at the County.

Robert Henry Dyer Lunenburg VA [0.686629]

My husband is descended from Robert Henry Dyer who died in Lunenburg VA 11/22/1764. At least the will is posted on that date. Children in the will are Susannah Dyer, and Robert. Also mentioned in the will are children of Robert. Susannah's husband is executor of the will. She married George Phillips in Lunenburg VA. Susannah died in 1785. Dyer Phillips is one of the sons, and he moved to TN, Greene County. Her daughter Mary married Martin Elam. One of their sons was George Phillips Elam from whom my husband descends.

I am researching the Dyer Phillips family from Lunenburg Co., Virginia. I have Dyer Phillips married to Patience Clay Dec 18, 1786. One son, John born 1805 in Lunenburg Co., Virgina married to Rebecca Ann Holmes, no marriage date. Children of John and Rebecca (Holmes) Phillips are: Mary H., John, Lydia M., Thomas Foster, Andrew T., Rebecca J., Malinda, I. Briton and Deborah M. Phillips. All children with the exception of Thomas Foster and Rebbecca were born in Greene Co., Tennessee. As I descend from fr

PHILLIPS- Anthony PHILLIPS VA>AL & Lilian BINFORD [0.909161]

Hi, I looking for any information on my PHILLIPS line and would appreciate any information or assistance. My ancestor is Anthony PHILLIPS (s/o John and Mary PHILLIPS). He was born ca. 1753-54 in Colony of Lunenburg, VA. He married Lilian BINFORD (d/o James and Mary BINFORD) on 26 Mar 1779 in Lunenburg Co., VA. Anthony died 12 Feb 1840 in Limestone Co., AL. I am descended from their son Thomas PHILLIPS, b. 04 Oct 1787 in VA, and died in Limestone Co., AL. Thanks, Donna Walker Eddins

Anthony Phillips migrated to Limestone Co., AL where he died. Sterling Phillips, one son of Joseph (and sibling of my GGGG GF William) migrated 1st to Wayne Co., TN just across the state line and then into Lauderdale Co., AL which is adjacent to Limestone. Some of our Group 3 Phillips line lived in Limestone Co. and some in Madison Co., AL

There is a disbursement sheet(s) in the 1890s probate records of Limestone Co., AL listing all the known heirs of Anthony Phillips who died in Limestone Co., AL 2-12-1840. Why the estate was settled so long after his death I don't know. Anthony, born ca 1754 in Lunenburg Co., VA, was the son of John Phillips and Mary Unknown. He married Lillian Buford on 3-26-1779 in Lunnenburg Co., VA. More than 100 individuals were named in Anthony Phillips estate settlement. There is a separate document in the estate file listing the amount each person received and often times a township for those heirs who did not live in Limestone Co., AL.
