Stokes County, North Carolina 24 day of August..appeared personally appeared with deposition taken by Charles Banner, acting Justice of Peace, of John Quillin of said county aged 76 years (b. abt 1757) first states periodically afflicted with fits that renders him unable to attend the court further states at times suffers from memory lapse partly due to the fits well as he can recollect..drafted private in Surry Co. NC in Capt Henry Smith Company of Militia Infantry and marched under Lt. Wm Meridith from Surry Court House by Labern??(difficult to read)..to Salisbury, NC there joined Gen. Rutherford's Army he believes, remained some time then marched to Charlotte, NC from thence to Camden, SC then to Chester & Laurens??(that is a guess) Counties in said State...near the Savannah River hired a William Fields as a substitute to serve the remainder of tour in order that he might return home to his wife who was in a delicate situation at that time..states drafted 5 months, served 4 returned home to Surry Co., NC cannot remember the regular officers, but saw and knew..2 of the Lewises Capt William Lewis and Lt. Joel Lewis...knows a man who can attest to his service, Jacob Helsepeek(Helse€”hard to read) in same company..now living towards the Dutch Settlements of Stokes Co .all this about time of Battle of Bryer Creek near Savannah River next service, volunteered as pvt served as a guard for Governor and the Assembly of NC then convened at Salem, NC Capt was Duling and Lt. Charles Brown two weeks of service Larken Samuel of Stokes Co, NC can prove next service pvt. Volunteer to range the Co. of Surry subdue the Tories met at old Richmond the Court House Capt Wm Bostick and Col Martin Armstrong marched crossing the shallows of the Yadkin & then towards Brushy Mountains in search of Tories not far from Cataba River met with Col. Cleveland, Maj Winston & the troops that had the prisoners taken at the Battle of Kings Mountain Capt Hampker and his Company was part of troop guarding said prisoners Capt Bostick and his Company was ordered to join the guard and convey the prisoners to the old Moravian Town in Surry Co., NC..and from there to Guilford Court House new guard there and this applicant was discharged serving at least six weeks thinks John Maib can attest to this service next service under Capt Wm Bostick, Lt. cannot remember Col Campbell from Virginia near New River commanded object was to route Tories marched from Surry Court House down Yadkin River sometimes one side, sometime the other to Abbots Creek and Uarra River and about the Mountain of the same name in pursuit of a Tory Capt Spurgin but failed to take him one month of service no evidence and know no one who can attest to this


1st born in Cumberland Co., NC

2nd no record of age but traditionary that was in March 1757.

3rd lived in Surry Co, NC when called to service..was drafted..all others volunteered..lived in same neighborhood ever since the Revolution living at the same place as present which is now Stokes Co. from the division of Surry.

4th answered as above.

5th subject to fits and cannot name all the officers

6th does not remember receiving a written discharge

7th that no one present but is acquainted with a number that testify as to his character..thinks that Larken Samuel & John Maib are reputable and will testify for him..


Larken Samuel & John Maib swore and attested for John Quillin 14 Sept 1833. Jacob Helsepeck..attested to a Quillin drafted service and that he served out almost all the time required before he hired a substitute


Pension Granted for 22 Dollars and 88 Cents per annum..
